Damiana Leaf and Powder Profile

Damiana herb is also known as- Turnera diffusa, Turnera aphrodisiaca, Damiana aphrodisiaca, Herba de la Pastora.

Introduction

The Mayas used damiana leaves and extracts of damiana herb as an aphrodisiac, but more specifically as a remedy for "giddy" love. Damiana herb was considered more important for focusing sexual energies than for creating them. Damiana herb has been popularly used across the Southwestern United States and Mexico as an aphrodisiac. Damiana turnera is also well known for its therapeutic properties and is helpful in treatment of asthma, bronchitis, neurosis, diabetes, dysentery, dyspepsia, headaches, paralysis, nephrosis, spermatorrhea, stomachache, and syphilis. The current edition of the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia recommends damiana herb for "anxiety neurosis with a predominant sexual factor ". Besides this, Turnera diffusa is also used as an anti depressant to cure depression. Damiana tea also helps in treating nervous dyspepsia, atonic constipation, and coital inadequacy.

Typical Preparations

Consuming Damiana tea is a popular method of ingesting the herb extract. For preparing Damiana tea the crushed Damiana leaves or Damiana extracts may be blended with other herbs as a tea blend, as the taste of it alone is rather bitter. Damiana herb extract may also be compounded into an elixer, as a capsule and in extract form.

Summary

Damiana herb is a popular aphrodisiac for men. Damiana leaf extract has also been traditionally used by numerous people for the purpose of enhancing orgasms in women, and for asthma, depression, digestive problems, and menstrual disorders. Two US patents list damiana extract as an ingredient in a "thermogenic" diet aid designed to increase metabolic rate.

Precautions

Teas of damiana herb may lower blood sugars, but tinctures do not. Since one of the traditional uses of the damiana herb was to induce abortion, it should be avoided in pregnancy.
